UVSC baseball shut out vs. Washington Print E-mail

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Utah Valley was shut out again as Washington completed a three-game sweep with a 5-0 win behind a strong pitching performance from Jorden Merry. The Wolverine (4-16-1) were also shut out against Portland, 2-0, on Friday.

Merry threw seven innings and struck out nine while allowing just four hits and at one point retired 14-of-15 UVSC hitters. Elliott Cribby and Tyler Cheney pitched perfect innings in relief for Washington.

The Huskies (12-6) won their seventh straight game while sending the Wolverines to their fifth straight loss.

Washington took a 2-0 lead in the second when Michael Burgher singled with the bases loaded and two out to drive in two runs. David Bentrott followed Burgher with an RBI single to give UW a 3-0 lead.

BYU track: At Tucson, Ariz., BYU senior Jacob Gustafsson qualified for regionals with a time of 1:50.41 in the 800 meters at the Willie Williams/Dave Murray Invitational.

The Cougars had five regional qualifiers Friday, but Bustafsson was the lone qualifier on Saturday. He finished second in the 800m.

"We just really needed to get outside and compete," BYU men's coach Mark Robison said. "It was nice for a lot of the guys who were redshirting the indoor season to enjoy the good weather and great competition."

Sophomore Kevin Biesinger also competed well for the men, finishing fourth in the 400m (47.99) in the non-team-scored meet.

Throwers Dustin Lawrenson (166-11.15) and Danny Lawson (160-5.20) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, among college discus throwers.

For the women's team, freshman Deezbaa Whaley set a personal best in the discus with a toss of more than 149 feet, good enough for fifth place. Sandra Mazan finished fourth in the 800m (2:13.9) and Kindy Longmore was eighth in the 100m (12.35).

BYU men's tennis: At Boise, Idaho,the BYU men's tennis team beat Yale 5-2 at the Boise State Spring Break Invitational.

"We won two out of our three matches this weekend, and each one was really tough," said BYU coach Brad Pearce. "Today our motivation was to leave and return home with one more win under our belt. I'm really proud of our guys for winning today."

Cassidy Mears and Evan Urbina recorded an 8-2 win in doubles play against Jeff Dawson and Matt Schimmel. The Cougars secured the doubles point after a tough 9-7 win at the No. 2 position by Daniel Hwang and Thomas Shubert.

• BYU gymnastics: At Tucson, Ariz., solid team performances in every event sparked a 194.225 outing for the BYU gymnastics team Friday night in a triangular meet at the University of Arizona.

The No. 30 Cougars' scored placed them ahead of Cal State Fullerton's 191.400, but behind host and 18th-ranked Arizona, which totaled 196.125.

BYU earned its highest mark on bars. No Cougar earned less than a 9.775, topped by Kylee Draper-Marvin's 9.875. Megan Donehue folled with a 9.8.

BYU softball: At Stanford, Calif., a walkoff home run from freshman Caschjen Davis in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the BYU women's softball team a 7-6 win over East Carolina at the Stanford Invitational II, and improved the Cougar record to 17-11.

BYU lacrosse: At Provo, the No. 4-ranked BYU men's lacrosse team dropped another close game to No.7 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs by a score of 8-6. The loss marks the second time the Cougars have lost at home this season, and is the first win for the Bulldogs over the Cougars.
