Murray High School junior David Archuleta survived another elimination vote on FOX's "American Idol," but this time, the show's judges weren't gushing over his performance.
On Tuesday, the contestants had to perform a song that was famous in the year they were born. Archuleta chose "You're the Voice," performed by David Foster and Jeff Pescetto, and the show's stingiest judge, Simon Cowell, said it resembled something from a theme park.
"You know it's one of those ghastly songs you sing when you've got, like, animated creatures with you and everyone joins in together," Cowell said on Tuesday's program. "That's what it reminds me of. I don't think that is you at all."
The show's two other judges, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, had higher praise for Archuleta. Abdul said, "David, you could sing the phone book and we'd fall in love."
During weekly results shows, contestants are eliminated by popular vote among the show's viewers. Before telling him he'd be advancing, host Ryan Seacrest asked Archuleta how he felt about Cowell's comments.
"Well, I had a lot of fun up there and maybe I got carried away," Archuleta said.
Chikezie, a 22-year-old from Inglewood, Calif., was eliminated Wednesday. There are now 9 contestants left, including Archuleta and fellow Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints member Brooke White of Mesa, Ariz.
Archuleta and the remaining contestants will perform again Tuesday at 7 p.m. on FOX, channel 13. |
