Open burn -- The open burn runs from April 1 to April 30, and Cedar Hills residents must obtain an open-burn permit during the County's month-long burn window. The permit is free, and can be picked up at the City Office, 3925 West Cedar Hills Drive.

Yard sale sign rules -- Signs for yard sales and garage sales must include a sign permit. There is a charge of $1 per sign, and the signs must be posted in private residential areas. All signs of any type placed in the City's right-of-way will be removed. The complete sign ordinance may be obtained at the City office or viewed on the City's Web site, www.cedarhills.org.

Students visit American Fork -- Seven students from Germany came to the American Fork City Council on March 25 and made brief presentations.

Mayor Heber Thompson gave each of them a copy of the city's flag. They were part of a group of 14 students and two teachers who have been touring the United States. Steve Garlick, the German teacher at American Fork High School, has arranged for the group to spend time in American Fork.

The students come from Dillingen, on the Danube River in southern Germany. While in north Utah County, they have been staying in the homes of local residents in American Fork, Pleasant Grove and Highland.

"They have been overwhelmed by the hospitality and friendliness of the people here," said one of the teachers who is traveling with them.

Umpires needed -- The Highland/Cedar Hills Baseball League needs umpires ages 15 and up. Prior experience umpiring super league and little league games is preferred. For those without experience, some training is required. The Major League division (ages 11-12) will pay $30 per game for home plate and $20 per game for bases. The Minor League division (ages 9-10) will pay $25 per game for home plate and $15 for bases. Doubleheader games will be played Tuesdays thru Fridays from late April through early June. Internet skills class -- The public is invited to a free basic Internet skills class at the American Fork Public Library. It will be on April 23 from 9-10 a.m. in the technology room of the library, 64 S. 100 East, American Fork

Space is limited and those who wish to attend should sign up at the library's circulation desk.

BrainStorm, Inc., a local company, is teaming up with the Library to provide this computer class to anyone in the community who is interested. Topics covered will include understanding how the Internet works, learning common Internet terms and tools, and searching for information.

Web cam installed at library -- The American Fork Public Library has a Web cam in the historical records room. It was donated March 26 by Post 4918 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, to enable family members to communicate with military members serving overseas.

Library director Sheena Parker expressed appreciation for the donation.

"We feel privileged to have this opportunity in our community," she said.

VFW member Gary Campbell, a veteran of the Vietnam war, said technology had changed.

"It was a lot different when I was in," he said. "We just had letters. It took us two weeks to get them."

"I can't imagine being in Vietnam and being able to sit down and look at my wife," he added. "Over there we had nothing like cell phones or computers. Nothing was like it is nowadays. I am glad they do it."

The VFW has provided the Web cams to libraries in north Utah County and has plans to extend that to all libraries in the state. Representatives said it would help those without Internet access at their homes, or without the cameras, to better communicate with their loved ones.

The cameras were provided by a grant from Mountain America Credit Union.
