Utah's own David Archuleta had another strong week on FOX's "American Idol," which is pretty normal for him.
The Murray High School junior has become quite the heartthrob, as evidenced by the scores of screaming fans that appear on the show. On Tuesday's show, one held up a sign that featured several kiss marks and read "Lick those lips," apparently referring to Archuleta's habit of quickly licking his lips during pauses in his songs.
Michael Johns, a singer and songwriter from Australia, was eliminated Thursday. There are now seven contestants left, including Archuleta and fellow LDS Church member Brooke White of Mesa, Ariz.
Archuleta has never been in danger of elimination. In fact, because he has performed so consistently well, typically stingy judge Simon Cowell said on Tuesday's show he had to try to find things to critique about Archuleta's performance.
"David, I'm nitpicking here because you are going to sail through to the next round," Cowell said.
This week, contestants were asked to perform a song they find inspiring, and Archuleta chose "Angels" by Robbie Williams. Archuleta played the piano while he sang, something he said was new for him. "But it worked out, so I'm glad I went for it," Archuleta said.
Cowell said it was the best song choice of the night and judge Randy Jackson said he "loved it, loved it, loved it." Next week, contestants must perform one of Mariah Carey's hits.
Archuleta and the remaining contestants will perform again Tuesday at 7 p.m. on FOX, channel 13. |
