Plenty of people would get bored doing the same thing every day for more than 20 years, but Marc Rizzo can't imagine anything better.
Since he was 8 years old, Rizzo has plucked, strummed and slid across every type of guitar music he could touch. Eventually, he focused on his two favorites -- flamenco and metal ¬-- which are the backbones of his albums ("Colossal Myopia" and "The Ultimate Devotion") and his live shows.
"It's cool 'cause we go from the real mellow Latin stuff to straight-up metal, sometimes in the same songs," Rizzo, speaking in a phone interview, said about the shows his three-member band performs. "I throw some Paco de Lucia pieces in here and there and traditional flamenco standards. ... For me it's a little trip 'cause I get to touch upon every type of music that I like."
As a career musician, Rizzo has been involved in several groups, including Brazilian metal band Soulfly and groove/thrash metal band Cavalera Conspiracy. For his solo music, however, Rizzo chooses to go almost entirely instrumental.
"If you love guitar music, then you definitely get listening to instrumental guitar music -- you get a real kick out of it," he said. "Guitar, to me, is an instrument you can do so much stuff with, so when it's all guitar, to me that's like being in heaven."
Rizzo will play, along with solo musician Joey Belladonna, at Club Vegas in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, just weeks before he joins Cavalera Conspiracy on a world tour.
Club owner and booking agent Dusty Ash said Rizzo is sure to attract a different breed of fans -- usually the ones who play guitar themselves.
"With Rizzo coming through I think you're going to attract guitar players in general," Ash said. "It's going to be guitar guys coming to see him no matter what he's doing."
Ash was eager to book Rizzo, whom he had seen a year ago when Soulfly came to Club Vegas.
"He's awesome -- great stage presence, a great musician, which is a lot of the reason I decided to grab it up," Ash said. "But besides that, he's a nice guy. He's fun to hang out with."
Rizzo said he is just happy to be playing whenever he can, but especially his solo music.
"I just love playing this stuff," Rizzo said. "I get such a kick out of playing these songs that are on my record that are definitely a real challenge to play."
