'Idol' may become battle of Davids Print E-mail
Logan Molyneux - DAILY HERALD

There are two Davids in the final five contestants on FOX's "American Idol" this season, and if this week was any indication, the two of them may be fighting it out to the end.

Both Murray High School junior David Archuleta and David Cook, a 25-year-old bartender from Blue Springs, Mo., received high praise from the show's judges after their performances Tuesday night. But perhaps even more telling is the fact that the two Davids are the only contestants who have never been in the bottom three in the show's popular vote totals. They were the first two to be declared safe from elimination Wendesday.

During weekly results shows, contestants are eliminated by popular vote among the show's viewers. Carly Smithson, a 24-year-old professional singer from San Diego, Calif., was eliminated Wednesday.

There are now six contestants left, including Archuleta and fellow LDS Church member Brooke White of Mesa, Ariz.

On Tuesday, judge Randy Jackson called Cook's performance a "molten hot lava bomb" and said it was "unbelievable." Earlier in the show, he said of Archuleta, "This boy's the one to beat." Typically hard-to-please judge Simon Cowell offered only lukewarm remarks on each performance.

Archuleta and the remaining contestants will perform again Tuesday at 7 p.m. on FOX, channel 13.

As always, it all comes down to the Church. I guess we don't want to list out if there are other religions possibly shared by the other contestants. Just the one that matters, right?

This paper serves a largely Mormon audience so of course there is interest in the contestants who are LDS. If the religious backgrounds of other contestants interests you, feel free to bring that up in discussions if you wish. Have a good day.

The national media serves a largely Christian (Protestant) audience, but I don't see that they list out every time someone they speak of is Christian. I just think that panders to the audience instead of serving the audience as a credible news source. I guess every news source is biased in some way and the Daily Herald is just biased when it comes to the LDS Church. I guess I should have just kept my mouth closed (Utah County rule #1: Don't question anything related to, directly or indirectly, to the LDS Church).

I think you're making an issue out of nothing. I read the article, it doesn't make a big deal out of the religion. It's just mentioned a time or two. Read the headline. It's more of a "battle between the two Davids". No big deal, unless you make it one.

You bring up "National media". Why did the national media make a big issue out of Mitt Romney's religion. He preferred to leave religion out of it, the media wouldn't let him.

Shhhhhhh! We can't talk about Mor*&#s. We wouldn't want to violate someone's constitutional right not to hear that word because it would violate their freedom from religion. So ... shame on the Daily Herald!

Again, I shouldn't have said anything. It probably is no big deal but just rubbed me wrong. The article is about the two Davids until you get to "There are now six contestants left, including Archuleta and fellow LDS Church member Brooke White of Mesa, Ariz." Was there a need for this if the article was not about Brooke? Not really. What it says to me is "There are now six contestants left but two for some reason matter more than the others." It just speaks to the priorities of this newspaper.

Yep that is what they are calling it nationally. My money is on David Cook but it wouldn't bother me at all if David Archuleta won it. Both are outrageously good singers.
