Coming to you straight from Key West, Fla., is El Siboney, a Cuban restaurant with plenty of flavor and variety.
The location in Lindon is the first El Siboney franchise outside of Florida, and you can tell the restaurant is unique. There are several dishes here that you can't find elsewhere in Utah Valley.
For example, try a side of yuca with your meal. It's a starchy root, almost like a stringy potato, that is prepared soft and served with a spiced sauce and onions. Or you can have french fries, if you're boring.
The main event at El Siboney is the meat, and there's plenty of it. As you might expect, the dishes are prepared and seasoned Cuban style, which is to say differently from how you may be used to having your steak, roast pork or grilled chicken. But in this case, being a little adventurous pays off.
We tried the Siboney Steak, one of the restaurant's signature dishes, which is a long, thin cut of beef. The meat was soft and tasty and needed no sauce to complement it --though we also liked it with the A1 that was on the table.
The Roast Pork was something different from both kalua pork and Southern-style pulled pork, but it went well with the Cuban bread that came with our meals. The onions and sauce piled on top of it added a powerful flavor.
We also really liked the Grilled Mahi-Mahi, a tropical fish filet that was full of flavor. It was grilled to perfection and served with lime, which added a nice twist to the dish.
Most meals come with a choice of sides, including white or yellow rice and beans. The black beans were much more flavorful than other beans we've had. The Cuban bread also was flavorful -- for bread -- and was served warm with a layer of butter.
One disappointment was the grilled chicken salad. The chicken was good and as flavorful as the rest of the dishes, but the salad itself was less creative and distinct, featuring mostly iceberg lettuce.
After all this, we had no room for dessert, though El Siboney does serve key lime pie, flan and other types of puddings. Some were made with things we had never heard of, but that's the idea here -- branch out and try some Cuban food.
