Strong pitching led the BYU softball team past Utah Valley 6-1 on Tuesday night at Gail Miller Field.

Freshman pitcher Paige Affleck only gave up one hit in the five innings she pitched, and relief pitcher Christie Zinanti did not give up a hit in two innings. Affleck had seven strikeouts and Zinanti three.

Heidi Stocks got the only hit for the Wolverines (17-34).

BYU (39-17) also proved to be tough at the plate. The Cougars had eight hits, two of which were home runs. Kristin Delahoussaye, Monica Gonzoles and Daniela Snow all went 2-for-3.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead over the Wolverines, with Snow driving in Delahoussaye in the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, with two outs, Stephanie Platt-Hopkins blasted a two-run home run to left-center, her seventh homer of the year. Later in the inning, Gonzoles hit a RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

With the help of two walks and aggressive base running, Utah Valley scored its only run in the fifth.

With two outs and runners on first and third, a double steal sent Lauren Augino home as Megan Niemann successfully stole second base.

Quiocho doubled home a run in the bottom of the fifth, and Delahoussaye hit a solo home run in the sixth.

The Cougars will next face Colorado State in a MWC doubleheader on Thursday in Fort Collins, Colo.

The 2008 Utah Valley softball season ended with a 6-1 loss at BYU Tuesday as the Wolverines finish the season with a record of 17-34.

"We've seen some rough times this season, but our girls have always stuck it out," said UVSC coach Todd Fairbourne.

"The credit goes to them. The way we finished makes me hopeful for next year. It's going to be tough to replace the girls that are leaving the team, but we have some great younger players and recruits coming back next year."

• BYU track: With the MWC Championships just a week away, the BYU men's and women's track field teams will travel to Salt Lake City today to participate in the Utah Twilight. The meet will be held at the Tally Stevens Outdoor Track Complex at East High School.

Athletes from BYU, Utah, Utah State, Weber State and Southern Utah will compete in the meet.

For coaches, today's meet will be an opportunity to help finalize rosters for the MWC Outdoor Championships, and for some, it could be their last opportunity of the season to qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships to be held later this month.

BYU has 34 athletes who have qualifying marks for the NCAA West Regionals on May 30-31 in Northridge, Calif., including 20 men who have qualified in 11 different events and 14 women who have qualified in seven different events.

Field events for the Utah Twilight will begin at 1 p.m., with running events beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Because of the Disney movie being filmed at East High School, fans are being asked to park at the baseball stadium, across the street. Parking will be limited and carpooling is highly recommended.
