It wasn't the long home run that Goose Kallunki was hoping for. It wasn't a line drive in the gap. After all, who has ever heard of a walk-off ground ball?
But don't think Kallunki is about to complain. He smiled as he talked about how a ground ball that snuck past Springville shortstop Jeff Boyd in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the game winner as Orem beat Springville 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon.
"I hit it just hard enough to get through. I was frustrated in my earlier at-bats so I'm happy with it," Kallunki said. "It's good to end up region on a high note."
With the game tied at 5-5, Travis Strong walked to start the rally. After an infield popup, Jeff Mella walked and Kallunki hit a ground ball in the hole between short and third that Boyd drive to make a diving backhand stop but it rolled into left field which gave Strong time to score the winning run.
It looked like Colton Baird had won the game in the sixth inning when he stepped up to the plate and hit his first career home run.
Baird struck out in his first at-bat. In his second at-bat he was lifted for a pinch hitter. In his third at-bat, he crushed a 3-1 pitch over the right field fence to give Orem a 5-3 lead.
"It didn't feel reel. I asked my teammates in the dugout after 'Is this reality?'" Baird said.
It was all too real for Springville, but it's never a good idea to celebrate too early against Springville. The Red Devils responded with two runs in the top of the seventh. Ben Doxey doubled to lead off the inning. MacMurdo followed with a double and Brandon Miller singled to tie the game.
"Springville has an attitude that they are going to win every time they step onto the field. They're a good team," said Orem coach Gary Miner. "It feels good to come back after how poorly we played on Monday. It's nice to go into the tournament with some momentum."
Orem took the lead in the second when C.J. Harrison beat out a ground ball that was hit to Trevor Jeffors at first, his throw to pitcher T.J. Whiting, who was covering first was wide of the bag, allowing Harrison to reach second.
Harrison Gray followed with his fourth home run of the year.
Orem starter Nate Adamson ran into trouble in the fourth inning when MacMurdo reached on an infield single and Isaac Allred double to right, but Orem's relay team was on the money. Baird hit second baseman Jordan Johnston, who fired home to Harrison, who applied the tag to MacMurdo.
It was a pivotal play because Miller followed with a single. The Red Devils got a run when a sharp ground ball was stopped by Adamson, who got the out at second, but the Tigers didn't have time to turn a double play.
Springville then took the lead in the fifth with a pair of 2-out runs. Adamson lost command and walked the bases loaded. Then on a 3-2 count, Allred doubled down the left-field line to put Springville up 3-2.
Orem had the answer in the bottom half of the fifth. Travis Strong was hit by a pitch and stole second. He came home on a Mella double that tied the game at 3-3 to set up the dramatic conclusion.
Mountain View's 11-6 win over Tooele gave the Bruins the Region 7 title. Orem finished a game back and will have the second seed, while Springville finished third.
