What is the deal with graffiti in Provo? I just went past the RC Willey Store and saw all kinds of graffiti on it. A block away, the same group of vandals hit the sidewalk protector in front of the newly proposed Zion's Bank Tower. These groups have become more brazen and seem to have no fear of the Provo Police Department. When my business was "tagged", it took one week for an officer to get back to me so that the mess could be photographed and added to the gang catalog.
The city has a program where young offenders are made to clean up graffiti. The problem is the amount of time it takes to get the graffiti off the properties. Meanwhile, this ugly vandalism is up there for all to see. It is just a matter of time before one of these punks puts graffiti all over one of the downtown murals.
More needs to be done to catch and prosecute these vandals. I would suggest putting cameras up in problem areas. Increasing criminal penalties could make someone think twice about doing it. Quick removal of graffiti would take away bragging rights from the "artists" themselves.
