F is for failure Print E-mail
Daily Herald

On May 1st, the American Lung Association released its State of the Air: 2008 report awarding Logan, Salt Lake City and Provo with "F" for short-term air quality where spikes in pollution make it especially harmful for lungs and submerge us and our beautiful mountains in a fog of health-damaging smog. These Utah communities (including their surrounding areas) rank among the dozen worst cities for spikes in air pollution. Logan ranks 6th, Salt Lake City 7th and Provo 12th.

Who is to blame for this appalling situation? We are. Our population is growing fast and with it have come urban sprawl and its harmful effects. But there are better, smarter, healthier ways of living. Unfortunately we're much too dependent on fossil-fuel vehicles that pollute. We get most of our power from dirty, harmful, coal-burning power plants. Equally disturbing, we continue to elect leaders that are failing to adequately protect the air, our health, and cannot even protect our view of the beauty around us. Until we get smart, change our ways and elect better leaders, we will continue to fail as the "good stewards of the earth" we are charged to be.

This thread discusses the Content article: F is for failure

Wise, thoughtful words, James. Unfortunately, our attitude along the Wasatch Front portends many long and dangerous years ahead, before this problem is properly mitigated. As our population grows, it brings with it two car families. In the bowl of our surrounding mountains, the resulting pollution is captured. Meantime, traffic increases along with the filth. Those lacking any foresight whatsoever seek to build more roads; a temporary solution to the traffic problem (any new road will eventually fill up) but a disaster to public health. The only solution is to get fewer cars on the road. Use public transportation! Car Pool! Walk to your churches/schools/supermarkets! Care about the children you want to raise here!

Unfortunately, unfortunately…falls on deaf ears. In Utah County, stewardship of the earth is associated with Al Gore rather than health and beauty and God and country. Publications like the Daily Herald spin biased, partisan and foolish anti-climate change diatribes while our elected officials pave over wetlands. And as long as the cable TV is working, outrage will not be heard. A community with such a religious heritage should not have become so disconnected from the earth. Indeed, Mormon’s believe that the earth was created for us; God’s Magisterial Handiwork. That this community tolerates its destruction, abuses it to the point of compromising public health and trashes it for excess and vanity is truly a heartbreaking sign.

And yet for this, a person who wants nothing more than to leave a healthy, sustainable environment for my children, I will be further disregarded as a tree-hugger, a Disciple of Gore. Ignorance is a contagion. One, you can still catch while on asthma medication….
