Mapleton resident Hannah Serr was recently honored with an award that has only been achieved by one other pianist in the history of the Utah Valley South Region of the Utah Federation of Music Clubs.
Serr, who has been taking piano lessons since age 7, was awarded her 75-point Gold Cup during the organization's Gold Cup Recital last Saturday.
The National Federation of Music Clubs, including the Utah Valley South Region, has a program through which young pianists learn solos and perform them for judges each year, earning up to five points per year depending upon the quality of their performance. Students scoring the highest amount of possible points for three years in a row earn their 15-point Gold Cup.
As students progress, they can eventually earn enough points for their 30-point, 45-point and 60-point Gold Cups. Students have other opportunities to earn points as well, including learning concertos. When the pianists are seniors in high school, all their points are added up and, if they have enough, they can receive the 75-point Gold Cup.
The Utah Valley South Region typically awards two or three 60-point Gold Cups per year, but Serr's 75-point Gold Cup is only the second cup of its type the organization has awarded since it was organized about 15 years ago. Hundreds of young pianists participate in the Utah Valley South Region's solo events each year.
Serr is the daughter of Casey and Lori Serr of Mapleton.
