To keep up with the growth of the community, the Lehi post office is expanding.
For the past few years in fact, about six new mail routes have been added every year, said L. T. Johnson, facility requirement specialist in Salt Lake.
The facility is adding approximately 8,300 square feet of internal work space. Johnson said that facility has a "three-phase expandable design" which could allow for three separate growth spurts. The current addition is the first of the phases, and is hoping to last at least 10 years Johnson said.
The new space will provide work space for letter carriers and operators. Although the building is growing, the staff will be kept the same.
"We realize that by expanding the building some of the staff will have to find other parking, but we're landlocked and that's really a challenge for us," Johnson said. "If we had waited to build until we found other additional property, it would have delayed the project."
The Lehi post office services Saratoga Springs as well as Eagle Mountain in addition to it's own community. Because of the growing demands on the facilities, Johnson said post offices around the country are trying to make better use of the space they have.
"We've been extending retail facilities to places other than actual post offices, and now offer discounts to customers who use the Internet for certain things," he said. "Basically, we really are just trying to better utilize our resources."
Johnson said that 120 days were given when the construction was approved, but the contractor is expecting to be done in about 90. The construction is predicted to be finished around the end of July. |
