PARADE ROUTE CHANGED - Lehi's historic parade route will be changed this year, a move that brought some tension at a recent city meeting. The route goes right past City Hall, which is now under construction for expansion and a large pit has been dug apparently for a basement. City manager Jamie Davidson said that construction would be ongoing at the time of the parade and he was concerned about the safety of patrons, especially of children running to catch candy being thrown from floats.

Davidson said he was reluctant to even bring up the topic, know that the route is historic and important to many people. Councilman Stephen Holbrook joked it would be better to not bring the topic up at all. "I know we are tweaking tradition," Davidson told Council members. "Unfortunately that is kind of where we are." Holbrook said the city celebration booklet has already been printed, showing the traditional route. Davidson said the city would advertise the change in the city newsletter and on the city Web site.

CONTEST TO NAME NEW ROAD -- UDOT has announced that on May 19 at 9 a.m. one class from Snow Springs Elementary will be chosen as the winner of a contest to name the new east-west connector that will run from Redwood Road to Interstate 15 at the American Fork Main Street interchange.

The announcement will be made during a school assembly and city officials are expected to be present. UDOT officials said the school has gone to a lot of work to research the history of the area in order to come up with meaningful name selections. The winning class will be rewarded with a pizza party. Snow Springs Elementary is located at 850 South 1700 West in Lehi and is right next to where part of the new road will be constructed.

USED CAR LOTS DEBATED --¬ Lehi Council members will soon debate whether they should change the city's ordinances restricting where used car dealers can operate. Council members recently asked city staff to put together a study of how other cities handle used car businesses.

Council members said they fear that without restrictions, used car dealerships would take over State Street and Main Street. Some cities restrict how many such businesses can operate in a city, while others require certain landscaping to make the sites look better, while other cities simply restrict the number of such businesses in certain areas.

Council members said they did not have concerns about the number of businesses selling new cars. The Council is expected to debate how Lehi should manage used car lots at its regular meeting next week.
