Dixon Middle school gets new dress code Print E-mail
Daily Herald

Clothes are going to be a bit more drab come next school year at Dixon Middle in Provo. School principal Rosanna Ungerman announced Thursday that the school would be adopting a new dress code that's not a uniform policy but sets a higher standard for students.

"I think it still allows for a great deal of variety and choice for students," Ungerman said.

The new code requires students to wear collared shirts. They will not be permitted to wear sweatpants or pajama bottoms, only plain-colored pants or jeans. Students can also wear only knee-length skirts or shorts. No logos or decals will be permitted except for any type of school logo.

"It could be a BYU or a Notre Dame logo as long as it's a school logo," Ungerman said.

Students, teachers and parents voted on the dress code. Eighty percent of respondents had to be in favor of the stricter code before it would go into effect. Ungerman said that according to the formula developed by the clothing standards committee only 78 percent of respondents voted yes -- so they compromised and allowed denim. A previous version of the new code only allowed pants in certain colors, not jeans.

Due to Dixon's efforts to make clothing more formal and less frumpy, the school has received monetary support. Ungerman said she received a check from an anonymous donor who was impressed by the school's new code. That donation and any others that may come will be put into a special account that will be used to help students who can't afford clothing.

I can't believe the misery this is going to cause for the substantial number of children who were dressed modestly, and without gang affiliation, who now cannot wear a shirt without a collar.

This dress code did not get 80% of the vote, and I believe many parent voters didn't realize what they had signed up for.

Hmmm. I bet this little exception doesn't last more than a few moments... There is after all school for bar tenders and such.
