Beehives and Buffalo Chips 5/10 Print E-mail
Daily Herald

Beehive to Springville for a plan to construct its new city office, court and police department building for nearly $14 million less than originally estimated. City administrator Troy Fitzgerald said that he and his staff want to closely watch the change orders on the project to keep expenses in line. As other officials might ruefully admit, that's where the money can really leak away. But for now, kudos to all involved for that rarest of possibilities, a government project that looks like it will cost less than expected.

Buffalo Chip to Eagle Mountain for firing a paramedic because he reported two questionable incidents to superiors. At a hearing a week ago, Judge Dennis J. Fuchs said paramedic Bryan Miner had an obligation under city policy to report both incidents and therefore had been terminated wrongfully. The judge ordered the city to pay Miner back-wages and immediately restore his job. It's nice to see a public servant in the quirky burg who has all his marbles.

Beehive to Sundance Resort for bringing back outdoor summer theater. This will provide not only entertainment but opportunity for local actors. Performances will run from Aug. 2-23 at the outdoor Eccles Stage, and seats will cost $15, lower than when the theatre closed six years ago. A round of applause to Robert Redford and the resort for restoring this wonderful tradition.

Buffalo Chip to Riverdale Police Chief Dave Hansen for shooting himself in the ankle while teaching a firearms safety course. There is some question about exactly how it happened -- whether the chief was wildly waving the gun around, for example -- but no one denies that he had a loaded gun in the class and plugged himself. He's out of the hospital now, but we expect the hole in his foot may have let all the air out of his ego. Clearly, a police chief and arms instructor should be able to keep himself out of the line of fire.
