In the 1890s and early 1900s, many of Provo's leading families made a pilgrimage each summer up Provo Canyon to get out of the heat. They took enough food and supplies to last for some six weeks, the worst weeks of summertime's sweltering temperatures.
Nancy. Calkins will focus her remarks on the Springdell Resort Company that incorporated in 1904 and its early stockholders and residents.
Calkins graduated from Brigham Young University in 1980 with a bachelor's in botany. In 1983 she began her career as a landscape designer, over time developing a specialty in restoration and reconstruction of historic landscapes in Utah. In the 1990s she began a secondary career as a historic preservation consultant. Calkins researches and documents historic properties for various city, county and state governmental agencies. |
