It's time to get out our bicycles Print E-mail
Daily Herald

Who are the villains responsible for the high oil and gas prices? Is it your local gas stations, OPEC, or the big oil companies? Perhaps the following saying would apply to us, "We have met the enemy, and he is us." Courts have upheld radical environmentalists who have used lawsuits to prevent oil drilling in Alaska as well as off shore in the Pacific and Caribbean and are supported by many of our Congressmen. It's ironic that Castro's Cuba is drilling oil 60 miles off the coast of Florida. With U.S. production falling far short in meeting our needs we must depend on OPEC nations and we can only expect prices to increase dramatically because of the consumption by the emerging superpowers such as China that expects to have 20,000,000 cars on the road by the year 2020. It's the simple economics of supply and demand. Senator McCain recently proposed eliminating gasoline taxes for the Summer. This solves nothing, in fact may only aggravate the problem. Reducing the cost increases demand, thus people will use more, which further reduces supply so that when taxes are re-imposed we will be paying more than before.

Our own Congressmen are a big part of the problem. If we as citizens don't demand they support drilling for our own oil and also control the radicals, we must face the harsh reality that we will continue to be at the mercy of the OPEC who could care less about our economic troubles. So we'd better get our bicycles in good operating condition; we may need them.
