Tonga academically ineligible for 2008 Print E-mail
Darnell Dickson - DAILY HERALD

BYU's depth at running back will be put to the test this fall, unexpectedly.

Bronco Mendenhall announced Monday that senior running back Manase Tonga has been ruled academically ineligible for the 2008 season. Tonga has been suspended from the university and may re-apply for admission in October for Winter Semester 2009. Tonga will redshirt the 2008 season and would be a senior in athletic eligibility in 2009.

The loss of Tonga (6-foot, 238 pounds) creates a number of issues with BYU's running game. While sophomore Harvey Unga and senior Fui Vakapuna are expected to receive the bulk of the carries in 2008, Tonga's versatility allowed him to be used as a blocker, receiver and goal-line and short-yardage back.

"Not having Manase with us this coming season is disappointing and hurts our program; however, our program is designed so that the next player in line will step in and contribute at a high level," Mendenhall said. "I'm confident Manase will take the necessary steps to restore his eligibility and be able to return to the team next season."

Tonga's suspension also creates opportunities for other running backs in the program. Redshirt freshman J.J. DiLuigi and junior Wayne Latu would be next in line to make an impact in 2008. DiLuigi, a highly regarded recruit from Canyon Country, Calif., missed all of the 2007 season with a foot injury. Latu had 12 carries for 39 yards in limited action last season. Neither player has Tonga's proven blocking ability or experience.

Incoming freshmen like Washington prep standout Jerry Bruner and California prep star Seta Pohahau both played running back and linebacker in high school. Coaches could decide to move Bruner and/or Pohahau to running back for fall camp to compensate for the loss in depth at the position.

Tonga, who is from San Mateo, Calif., originally signed a letter-of-intent with the University of Utah out of Aragon High School. After serving an LDS mission to Honduras, Tonga opted to play at BYU. He saw action in 12 of the Cougars' 13 games last season and was credited with 88 carries for 305 yards and eight touchdowns.

This isn't the first time Tonga has been in trouble at BYU. In July of 2007, he was arrested after a traffic stop for allegedly failing to pay a traffic ticket and giving a fake name to Provo police. A warrant had been issued for his arrest because of an unpaid traffic ticket from 2006. Tonga was suspended for the 2007 opener with Arizona.
