It is a testament to the miracle of modern medicine and events such as the Susan Komen Race for the Cure, which raises funding for continued research, that the morbidity rates for breast cancer have steadily decreased.
However, I believe the time has come for attention and funding to be directed toward the more insidious disease of ovarian cancer. More troubling statistics are: Ovarian cancer is the fourth leading cause of death among women in the U.S.; it occurs in 1 of 57 women (up from 1 in 70 several years ago); death rates have risen, up 20 percent in 2004 over 2003; and more than 25,500 women will be diagnosed and 16,000 will die this year from ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is very treatable when caught early but the vast majority of cases are not diagnosed until it's too late.
Perhaps it's time for a Race for the Cure II to educate women about this horrid disease as well. And then someone you love will have a fighting chance against this cancer and survive past five years; my mother didn't.
