Gas Prices

Gas prices in Utah jump 36 cents in one month -- Despite healthy oil inventories in the United States, gas prices in Utah jumped 36 cents in just one month to yet another new record high, according to a report from AAA Utah on Tuesday.

Statewide, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded shot up 36 cents to $3.62 per gallon from a month ago. That's 42 cents higher from a year ago. In the Provo-Orem area, prices jumped 33 cents to $3.57, while Salt Lake City has the lowest prices in the state at $3.54 per gallon. Nationally, the average price is $3.73 per gallon, 40 cents higher than a month ago. Arizona has the lowest average price at $3.52, while Alaska tops the nation at $3.98 per gallon.

"The United States has relatively healthy oil inventories, and in the past, inventory strength typically kept prices in check," said Rolayne Fairclough, AAA Utah spokesperson. "But strong inventories are not enough to keep prices down when compared with increasing worldwide demand, constrained oil output by producing nations and the belief by investors that prices will move even higher in the coming months."

"As motorists look to the summer months, they will need to plan carefully to keep gasoline expenses down," Fairclough said. "The increase in demand during summer typically pushes prices upward, and, as always, fuel prices are impacted by unforeseen geopolitical events, weather disasters and breakdowns in oil refining infrastructure."
