21ST ANNUAL UVSC AUTO EXPO AND SWAP MEET -- Utah Valley State College will host the 21st annual Auto Expo and Swap Meet on Friday and Saturday on the UVSC campus and at Thanksgiving Point. The event will feature more than 600 car entries, eligible for more than 110 awards. The Auto Expo is among one of the largest car shows in Utah and includes local car clubs and unique private collections. This year, Dennis Gage will visit the expo while filming his TV show "My Classic Car" which appears on the SPEED network and reaches more than 75 million households in North America. The expo will also host Charley Hutton, one of the top automobile painters in the United States.¬ ¬
The activities start with a pre-event social Friday at Barber Brothers at 1341 North Main Street in Spanish Fork, (I-15 Exit 257) from 1-5:30 p.m. A cruise will begin at 5:45 p.m. with the cars leaving Barber Brothers to Utah Lake State Park and ending up at the UVSC Auto Trades compound in Orem with demonstrations, live music and a barbecue. The cost for the barbecue is $5. Saturday's Car Show and Swap Meet at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi will be from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Public admission for the car show is $3 per person and children 3 and under are free. There is no admission fee for the swap meet, which will be located in the parking lot just off of Electric Park at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. Proceeds exceeding show costs will be donated to scholarships for auto, diesel and collision repair students at UVSC. ADOPT-A-THON AT NORTH UTAH VALLEY ANIMAL SHELTER SATURDAY -- The North Utah Valley Animal Shelter will have its first Adopt-a-thon on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be free drinks and cotton candy offered to those who attend. Shelter officials hope to find the animals some permanent homes. The shelter is at 193 N. 200 West, Lindon (north of the landfill). More information is available by calling 785-3442. OREM RECEIVES RECYCLING AWARD -- The City of Orem received an award May 13 from representatives of Waste Management, Inc. for increasing the participation in its voluntary, curb-side recycling program to over 5,000 homes -- up almost tenfold from the 550 homes involved in the year 2000, when the program was almost cancelled because of the low participation rate. The latest yearly figure for tons recycled is 1,590 tons, up from 113 tons collected in the 12 months prior to a challenge to participate that was issued to Orem residents by Mayor Jerry Washburn in 2000. WEAVER NAMED "UTAH RECORDER OF THE YEAR" -- Donna Weaver, Orem's city recorder, was recognized at the May 13 City Council meeting for being named as "Utah Recorder of the Year" from among the city recorders in 240 cities in the state. NEW CITY AUDITING CONTRACT INKED -- Orem will be contracting with the firm of Wisan, Smith, Racker & Prescott, LLP, for up to five years to perform auditing services for the city. The services will be for fiscal years ending June of 2008 to 2012. Yearly maximums to be paid will be $24,900, $25,600, $26,400, $27,200, and $27,900, respectively, for those years. The Orem City Council approved authorizing the agreement May 13. EARLY DEADLINE -- The North County Newspapers will have an early deadline for celebrations for the May 29 edition. Those who wish to place weddings, anniversaries, missionaries or birthdays in the paper for May 29 need to make their submissions by May 23 at 2 p.m. The deadline for obituaries, public notices and classified advertising remains May 27 at 10 a.m. North County Newspapers is located at 399 E. RELAY FOR LIFE TO FIGHT CANCER EVENT IN OREM -- Relay for Life events will be held all over Utah County on June 6 -7 and 20-21, including Relay for Life of Provo-Orem's event at Orem Junior High School, 765 N. 600 West, on June 6-7 from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Similar events will be held June 6-7 at Lone Peak High School in Highland and June 20-21 in Payson. At all events, a survivors reception will be held at 5:30 p.m., an opening ceremony/survivor and caregiver recognition ceremony at 6:15 p.m., followed by entertainment, food, children's games. A luminaria ceremony will be held at 10 p.m. Relay for Life is a community celebration of loved ones lost to cancer, support for those facing cancer, and to renew the hope of finding a cure.
