UDOT contest -- For the first time in Utah's history, elementary school students had the chance to name a new state road, the east-west corridor project that will generally follow Lehi's 10th South alignment. UDOT will announce the name at an assembly May 19 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Snow Springs Elementary School, 850 South 1700 West in Lehi.
"We wanted to give students, teachers and their families the opportunity to learn more about their surrounding communities, feel ownership of the area and shape the future," said Bryan Adams, UDOT project manager. "The unveiling assembly will be a fun reward for the whole school." The students spent a month studying the history and environment of the Lehi and Saratoga Springs communities and the guidelines UDOT provided. Each class posted name ideas under a banner outside of the school's cafeteria then a panel of city and transportation officials voted for the name they thought would be the best fit. The winning class will receive T-shirts and a pizza party. Creamies donated ice cream to reward the entire school for participating. To prepare for the upcoming construction UDOT will also educate the students on construction zone safety at the assembly. The new thoroughfare will connect the communities of Lehi and Saratoga Springs from Redwood Road at about 600 North to I-15 at American Fork Main Street. The corridor is on schedule to begin construction this fall. Gas leak -- A gas line was sliced Tuesday during excavation at Lehi City Hall, 153 N. 100 East, while preparing for the city hall addition construction project. The gas leak was reported at approximately 8:30 a.m., patrons and city staff were evacuated at the one-block municipal campus, Qwest shut off the gas, cleared the buildings, and by 9:30 city employees were allowed to return to work. LCC May asset -- The Lehi Community Council asset of the month is on integrity. Parents are the foundation of a child's belief system and kids act on their convictions and stand up for their beliefs. Parents can model integrity in daily life. Talk about what you believe and value, then act on what you say. When it comes to building positive values, you are your child's most important teacher. Information fair -- Lehi City is planning an information fair for June 6 at the Lehi Legacy Center, 123 N. Center St. from 1-6 p.m. All Lehi City departments including some affiliates will have booths with handouts, demonstrations and staff to answer questions about municipal and auxiliary services. "We want everybody in the public to come and view what we do," said Arnie Hunt, who is overseeing the event. Six months ago, the city hosted its first information fair and those who attended were treated to demonstrations on what happens when someone touches a live wire (Lehi Power), a storm drain visual, "how to" videos on home maintenance and repair; and free rides up one of several power truck buckets at least three stories high, safety gear included. Early deadline -- The North County Newspapers will have an early deadline for celebrations for the May 29 edition. Those who wish to place weddings, anniversaries, missionaries or birthdays in the paper for May 29 need to make their submissions by May 23 at 2 p.m. The deadline for obituaries, public notices and classified advertising remains May 27 at 10 a.m. The North County Newspapers are located at 399 E.
