From personal to home decoration, The Busy Biddy has everything needed for a one-stop escape.
Janet Maxfield, the owner of The Busy Biddy, has been doing interior decorating for over 15 years. After working in homes for so long, she decided to follow a dream of opening up her own personal shop.
The shop has been open for nearly three years, and was created out of an old historic Orem home.
"My brother-in-law used to own this, and was going to tear it down to build a dental office," Maxfield said. "But instead, we took it and just gutted the thing. We took it down to the studs and just changed it completely."
Keeping the original, old-fashioned theme of the home fit perfectly into Maxfield's design for her shop. Selling everything from lamps to candles to seasonal decorations to knick-knacks of every kind, she has also included pieces of jewelry designed by local vendors.
A good thing about owning her own shop means Maxfield gets to control her prices, she said. And something she doesn't do, is mark up the prices of her jewelry vendors.
Maxfield travels around the country to various shows to find her jewelry, but even though her travels take her far away, she prefers the local community.
"I really like the shop because it brings in people from all around the area," Maxfield said. "And usually they come back in, too. That's the best thing about this place, is that things are always changing everyday."
The Busy Biddy doesn't only sell small things, however. Included in the vast selection are custom-designed sofas and other furniture.
"I've just worked in designing for so long I just have to keep doing it," she said. "People can come in and look through my books and pick out whatever fabric they want, it's just great."
Reaching out to the garden, the summer-seasonal selection includes wrought iron garden pieces for the warm weather to come.
Maxfield also keeps her family busy with Busy Biddy, as her 18-year-old son Chandler does the delivering, 16-year-old Brei keeps track of inventory, and husband Chad keeps the books. Her sales staff includes her mother, LeeAnn.
Maxfield is a native Utah resident, and currently resides in Pleasant Grove. She hopes to expand her inventory to the backyard of the home, selling more garden furniture and patio accessories.
