Eagles support platform -- The Fraternal Order of Eagles Pleasant Grove Aerie 3372 donated $250 towards Miss Pleasant Grove 2007 Whitney Merrifield's platform for Challenge Day, a national nonprofit organization focusing on breaking down stereotypes and prejudices among teenagers.
"It's a pretty neat little program she's got set up and I just think there ought to be some other businesses out there to help raise funds for her," said Aerie 3372 President Jeff Taylor. Merrifield will be a contestant for Miss Utah 2008 in July and is raising $12,000 in funds for United Way to sponsor Challenge Day at Pleasant Grove Jr. High and at Pleasant Grove High School. She has gotten the support of Mayor Mike Daniels of Pleasant Grove and Mayor Jim Dain of Lindon along with administration from both schools. F.O.E. is sponsoring a fundraiser on June 14 at the Pleasant Grove Aerie, 220 W. 600 West, with a horseshoe tournament and a raffle for prizes. Donations the fundraiser or for the raffle contest can make arrangements with vice president Richard Willson at 623-9490. ¬ Photography contest -- The Pleasant Grove Library is having a "Catch the Reading Bug" children's photography contest. Photos must be taken by the child and each child may enter two photos. All entries must be received by July 1. The photographs will be displayed in the hallway downstairs and available for viewing on the library's web site. Winners will be announced the week of July 29. Pictures may be taken of live bugs, fake bugs, or siblings dressed up as bugs. Photographs of insects engaged in literary activities are especially encouraged. Entry forms are available at the library. Each photo must be accompanied by an entry form. Create a Bug -- To kick off the Pleasant Grove City Library's summer reading program, "Catch the Reading Bug," the library is having a "Create a Bug" contest for children. Each participant may make one bug, using materials of participant's choice, such as paper, wire, etc. All creations must be returned to the library by July 1. The contest is for patrons ages three and older. Each age group will be judged separately. Prizes will be awarded for most creative, creepiest, biggest pest, most unusual, most realistic, cutest bug and most popular-people's choice. Voting will take place at the library from July 15-22. Winners will be announced the week of July 29. Entry forms are available at the library. Firefighters breakfast -- The Pleasant Grove firefighters are hosting a "Good Food, Good Friends, Good Fun" breakfast on May 31 from 6-11 a.m. at the fire station, 110 S. 100 East, Pleasant Grove. Tickets are available at the station or at the door the morning of the breakfast. Early deadline -- The North County Newspapers will have an early deadline for celebrations for the May 29 edition. Those who wish to place weddings, anniversaries, missionaries or birthdays in the paper for May 29 need to make their submissions by May 23 at 2 p.m. The deadline for obituaries, public notices and classified advertising remains May 27 at 10 a.m. The North County Newspapers are located at 399 E. Writer needed -- North County Newspapers is looking for correspondents to report on events and submit profiles in our communities. The individual will be expected to write one to two articles a week in addition to gathering short news items from Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Lindon, Pleasant Grove, Cedar Hills or Lehi.
