Drive slow, save gas Print E-mail
Daily Herald

I am writing in response to a letter to the editor by Ernie Rogers, of Pleasant Grove, as printed in the Daily Herald on May 14, 2008:

One of the best kept secrets in the automotive industry is that slow driving increases fuel economy. According to the U.S. Department of Energy's Fuel Economy Guide (www.fueleconomy.gov), for speeds between 55 and 75 mph, the average automobile efficiency decreases about 3 mpg (miles per gallon) for every increase in speed of 10 mph.

For example, if an automobile gets 30 mpg at 75 mph, it will get about 33 mpg at 65 mph. And if gasoline costs $3.60 per gallon, driving at the slower speed will result in a savings of $2.20 for a 200-mile trip.
