Victims in fatal Provo Canyon crash ID'd Print E-mail
Jeremy Duda - DAILY HERALD

The Utah Highway Patrol on Monday identified the victims in Sunday's fatal wreck in Provo Canyon.

The crash claimed the lives of two children -- 7-year-old Daniel Lopez and 8-year-old Jennifer Lopez -- both of Provo. The children's mother, 33-year-old Maria Ruiz, is in serious condition at University of Utah Medical Center, though her injuries are not expected to be life-threatening, according to UHP spokesman Cameron Roden.

Roden said the two Lopez children were ejected from Ruiz's 2003 Pontiac Grand Am, indicating that they were not wearing seat belts.

Two 13-year-old boys who were in the car were transported to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center and Primary Children's Medical Center. Roden said the boys are in fair condition.

The fatal crash occurred Sunday evening as Ruiz was leaving the Vivian Park recreation area in Provo Canyon. According to Roden, she did not see an oncoming 2000 Ford F-350 that was towing a camper trailer, and pulled in front of it as she was turning onto U.S. Highway 189. The truck T-boned Ruiz's car, which was nearly ripped in half by the force of the impact.

The driver of the pickup truck, 35-year-old Jason Bell, of Heber City, suffered minor injuries and was taken to UVRMC. Two children who were in the truck, ages 11 and 5, were both cleared by medical personnel at the scene.

Ruiz's sister was also transported to the hospital, Roden said. She was in a separate vehicle, behind Ruiz, and was not involved in the accident but was transported as a precaution because she is seven months pregnant.

Roden said the accident was the first fatal wreck of the year in Provo Canyon, at least within Utah County. After the accident, some nearby residents cited the winding canyon road as inherently dangerous.

"Visibility becomes diminished a little bit," Roden said. "We haven't had major problems in that area as far as mass casualties or anything like that, but any canyon road is going to be a little bit more dangerous."

UHP does not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.

The two children from the Provo Canyon wreck were two of the six people who died on Utah's roads and highways over the weekend. On Saturday, two people were killed in a head-on collision in St. George, and a man was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Roy when another driver hit his motorcycle. Another man died on Sunday after crashing his car into a semi trailer while leading police on a chase in Parleys Canyon.

Keeper you are a vile pig. Two children died and all you can comment about are illegal aliens.

Since you are so passionate about illegal aliens, why don't you move to Arizona or Texas and become a Minuteman. Utah would be a much better state without you in it.

Take your blinders off. Maybe they would still be alive if immigration laws were enforced in this state! If you can't handle the collateral damage take it up with the legislature.

Ah, Keeper of Asinine Opinions once again demonstrates that it isn't really the issue of illegal immigration but his own racism that is his issue. He assumes once again that because the victims names are from what he considers a lesser race, their mere presence in HIS country is indication of some criminal act. Once again Keeper, there is a compound in northern Idaho with a bunk waiting for you. Why don't you improve Utah and move up there?

Actually if you want to know who really contributes to the over crowding of South Fork Canyon, it's all the Zoobies up there illegaly burning pallets in bon fires and getting it on in their cars (oh wait, I mean "watching movies on their laptops". But to Keeper they can't be a part of the problem because they are, in general, a part of the Master Race and as such can do no wrong.

Now that's no way to talk about BYU's football team!

Hey, 5Double-U, I notice that every time someone mentions the Utah County Sheriff, you crawl out of the woodwork. Is Sheriff Tracy your daddy?

I agree, we should enforce our immigration laws. But tell me Mr Keeper. If we did and all the "illegals" were here legally, then how does that stop tragedies from happening?

That's like asking what's the difference between a controlled release and an uncontrolled flood.

Did you even read the question?

His blinders are distorting his view.

No actually I rarely post except when someone makes an exceptionally asinine comment. For some reason, I mainly post about your comments. I'd really like the illegal immigration problem resolved but I find racist imbeciles like you to be a greater threat to the future of our country.
