Next year, students at what will soon be Utah Valley University will be able to do more with their Wolverine ID card than pay for copies or check out books in the new library; the new UV OneCard Plus will work as a Visa debit card and a UTA bus pass.
"I think it's pretty cool, personally," said Dawn Burgess, the manager of UVSC's Campus Connection. She plans to get and use the new card when it becomes available in July.
The school has teamed up with Utah Community Credit Union, where 20 percent of the student body has an account, to offer the Visa cards. The card cannot be used as a debt-accumulating credit card. According to statements by the school, UVU will be the first college or university to combine all of these technologies into one card.
"The number of different technologies that are coming together in this one piece of plastic have never been done," said Brad Norton the senior vice president of marketing and development for UCCU.
The school wanted to have something that could be accepted campus-wide and community-wide. The card can be used to make purchases anywhere Visa is accepted.
"We're trying to make it a more campus-wide and campus-accepted card as well as publicly accepted, too," Burgess said.
They also wanted the community to see it.
"We're looking for impact on the community. We want the community to know the college, or soon to be the university, what impact is has on the community," said Mike Jones, the senior accountant at UVSC and head of the OneCard committee.
Utah Valley State College will change its name to Utah Valley University on July 1. The new cards won't be available until after that date. Each current student and employee will have to get a new ID card, but only those with accounts at UCCU will be able to use the card as a debit card.
