OREM SAILOR KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN -- The U.S. Navy on Friday identified a serviceman from Orem who was killed in Afghanistan.

Lt. Jeffrey A. Ammon, 37, died on May 20 from injuries caused by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan's Aband District. He is survived by a wife and two children.

Ammon had been serving as part of a Provincial Reconstruction Team, or PRT, in the city of Ghazni in eastern Afghanistan, according to Sean Hughes, a civilian spokesman for the Commander Navy Region Northwest in Bangor, Wash.

Before going to Afghanistan, Ammon was a planning and operations officer at Commander Navy Region Northwest. Ammon enlisted in the Navy in 1988, and spent years as an engineer on the nuclear submarine USS Alabama SSBN 731.

Rear Adm. James Symonds, the Navy Region Northwest commander, described Ammon as a professional who was extremely dedicated to his family, his shipmates and his nation.

"Please take a moment to reflect upon and recognize the great sacrifice Lt. Ammon made while helping the Afghan people rebuild and develop their country. Lt. Ammon is a hero and a role model. I ask each of you to keep his family in your thoughts and prayers," Symonds said in an internal Navy message.

PRT Ghazni is one of about 26 teams in Afghanistan that provide support for the Afghan government's efforts to improve security, infrastructure, democratic governance and essential services, as well as expand economic opportunities. Ammon was part of the team's economic opportunities section and worked to secure microloans to assist small Afghan businesses. Microloans are small loans provided to poor entrepreneurs and others who live in poverty.

"That helped them re-open their stores and re-stock inventory and buy business equipment and repair damage and hire employees and pay for all the things you need to get a business up and going again," Hughes said of Ammon's work in Afghanistan.

Hughes described Ammon as being extremely dedicated to his work. After serving a 12-month tour in Afghanistan with PRT Ghazni, he volunteered to extend his service there by another year, Hughes said. Ammon was only two months into his second tour when he was killed.

"He decided to stay for a second year because he enjoyed what he did. He was fulfilled by what he was doing so he decided to stick it out another year," Hughes said.
