Residents brave the rain to honor veterans -- Pouring rain and cold temperatures did not prevent residents from honoring veterans at Pleasant Grove City's Memorial Day program on Monday. Approximately 70 people attended the event at the Veterans Memorial Garden, north of the cemetery.
The Pleasant Grove Fire Department Honor Guard performed the flag ceremony, which was followed by four speakers. "We plan the speakers with the mayor," said Melissa Finch, who conducted the program. American Fork resident Bill Snow, who was in the military for over 30 years with the Air Force and National Guard, spoke about veterans who have given their lives for their country. "Throughout history, many people have offered their lives for freedoms," he said. "On this Memorial Day, we honor those who have gone before us." Gary Barnes, Pleasant Grove resident who has served in the Special Forces, also spoke of honoring those who have died, as well as embracing the living. Marine Brandon Holland of Montana served in Iraq during 2005-2006. Holland spoke about the true heroism displayed to him by fellow Marines. "We are honored today to have three wonderful men who served this country in times of war," said Mayor Michael W. Daniels. Daniels spoke about ordinary problems the city has, such as potholes in the streets or disagreements about the color of a building. "There are men and women out there who would give their lives so we can have those arguments," he said. Daniels and Deon Giles, Leisure Services Director, displayed a flag which was presented to Pleasant Grove because the city covers the costs of utilities for families of soldiers serving in Iraq. The flag flew over the headquarters of the Multi-National Corp-Iraq on Sept. 11, 2007. "We have no specific plans for the flag as of yet," said Daniels. "I'm confident it will serve for special occasions to come." Council to consider pay raise -- Pleasant Grove's City Council will continue discussions about a possible pay raise at next week's City Council meeting. The compensation for mayor and council has not been changed for approximately 10 years, according to Frank Mills, City Administrator. If the Council agrees to make changes, the decision will be on the agenda for a public hearing following Tuesday's meeting. At issue is whether there will be an increase in compensation for Council members, the Mayor, or both and when it will take effect.
