Sen. Hatch lambastes climate bill Print E-mail
Daily Herald

Senator Orrin Hatch has issued the following statement on America's Climate Security Act, sponsored by Sens. Joseph Lieberman and John Warner, which aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in a supposed effort to fight global warming:

Lieberman-Warner is not the most effective approach to reducing CO2, but it may be the most harmful economically. The most powerful force in our society is the free market. We should be tapping into the free market to reduce CO2 rather then creating a false market that simply redistributes wealth to preselected winners and losers. And we should make sure we are not disadvantaging ourselves vis-à-vis our international competitors.

Some of my colleagues argue that the U.S. needs to lead out in reducing CO2, but what does it really mean to lead out? It means an annual $120 billion reduction in our economy, while letting our competitors like China off the hook. It means sending more than a million of our manufacturing jobs to countries with less-stringent environmental standards resulting in a net increase of global CO2 emissions.

I always thought Democrats wanted to increase manufacturing jobs and reduce CO2. Unless we require the same standards of our international competitors, the bill would certainly reduce jobs and increase global CO2 emissions.

The bill is also sure to dramatically increase gas prices at the pump. No aspect of the economy harms the poor more disproportionally than high energy prices.

At a time when we are already seeing dramatic increases in gas and food prices, it would border on immoral to pass legislation that would effectively levy a $6.7 trillion regressive tax on all Americans.

This bill is enormously expensive and the cost will be passed through to the consumer (you and me). This is the WRONG way to go.

Orrin, What happened to your power, influence, clout etc. that you promised last election? Oh that's right you were exposed for the Reich Wing "I have seen the intelligence and it is real but I can't tell you because then the terorists will be tipped" propaganda.

Lockstep with Bush until the end aren't you? Too bad you are not facing re-election this year. On the other hand it will be fun to watch you move your office into the basement after Novemeber when your party will be able to fill a telephone booth!

How are your Chinese language lessons coming along?

Typical Democrat! Tax people into the stone age and give the Chinese Communists an economic free ride at the American worker's expense.

That has been the Republican'ts role for the last 10 years. Did you forget which party has held majority in Congress during that span and the last 7 years of the Liar and Thief? Ginko is good for your memory.
