As a way to help others in need, Principal of Foothills Elementary Mr. Schollenberger, spent six hours on the roof as a reward to the students who contributed donations.
PTA President Rhonda Slater along with Natalie Frandsen and Leslie Whitlock put together an organized collection of goods that will be sent to an Indian Reservation in Dinehotso, Arizona. The families on the reservation make only $12,000 a year and the children are in need of supplies to take with them to boarding school, so with the help of each student and a huge sacrifice by Mr. S. the children made the goal of getting 200 care packages for each child on the reservation.
The kindergarteners graders brought in 200 toothbrushes, the first graders brought in toothpaste, the second graders brought small toys, the third and fourth graders donated fleece blankets, the fifth graders brought in brushes and combs and the sixth graders donated socks.
"Within two weeks we had 90% of what we needed," said Frandsen. "It happened so quickly."
Throughout the upcoming school year students will also be donating school supplies and hats and gloves, then near December Sandy resident Susan Robinson, Care for a Community, will be taking the supplies to the reservation.
"I'm very proud of the students," said Mr. S. "For each bin that was filled I spent an hour on the roof, they filled all six, so I was up there for six hours." Mr. S. knew from a previous experience that the reflection off the roof can be hot, so he was seated under a canopy, with a bucket of treats and a megaphone. The children stood below as he tossed down treats, and they drew chalk drawings for Mr. S.
"The children were so excited," said Slater. "They were glad to help and kept saying how excited they were and that they hoped the children liked what they brought." |
