BYU outfielders Sean McNaughton and Kent Walton were selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball draft on Friday by the Chicago Cubs and Oakland A's, respectively.
McNaughton, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Lakewood, Wash., was taken in the 38th round as pick No. 1,151 in the draft, while Walton, a 6-foot junior, was chosen in the 42nd round as the No. 1,264 pick. A couple other Cougar connections were also taken in the draft. Incoming freshman signee Marc Oslund, a pitcher from West Torrance, Calif., was also selected in the 42nd round by Kansas City as the No. 1,255 pick. Incoming freshman signee Nik Turley, a left-handed pitcher from La Canada, Calif., was selected in the 50th round by the New York Yankees as the No. 1,502 pick. And former Cougar southpaw pitcher Blaine Howell, now with Pensacola Junior College, was taken in the 13th round by Cincinnati as the No. 389 pick. Former Pleasant Grove standout Egan Smith, who now plays for Southern Nevada, was also selected Friday. He was taken in the 35th round (1,071 overall) by Cleveland. Several players from the Mountain West Conference were chosen Friday. From TCU, Bryan Kervin (SS, 27th round, 819 overall, Boston) and Cody Dunbar (RHP, 30th round, 907, Toronto) were selected. From UNLV, it was Xavier Scruggs (1B, 19th round, 575, St. Louis), Michael Brenley (C, 36th round, 1,091, Chicago Cubs) and Jeffrey Urlaub (LHP, 47th round, 1,402, Florida). From New Mexico, Rober LaFromboise (LHP, eighth round, 252, Seattle) and Scott Cracey (RHP, 15th round, 459, Toronto) were taken. From San Diego State, it was Troy Hanzawa (SS, 16th round, 496, Philadelphia), Shane Kaufman (RHP, 28th round, 837, San Francisco) and Brandon Pullen (LHP, 37th round, 1,122, Seattle). Joe Pond, a right-handed pitcher from Judge Memorial, was the only Utah high schooler taken on Day 2 of the draft. He went in the 39th round (1,186th overall) to Philadelphia. |
