College gets new associate dean

Dean David B. Magleby of the Brigham Young University College of Family, Home and Social Sciences has announced the appointment of Susan Sessions Rugh, BYU associate professor of American history, to a three-year term as the new associate dean for the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences, effective June 1, 2008.

Rugh will replace Elaine Walton, who will be taking a professional development leave of absence to BYU-Hawaii during the upcoming academic year.

 


Faculty member receives national honor

American Women in Radio and Television recently announced the winners of its 2008 Gracie Awards, recognizing Erin Goff, editorial director of the Brigham Young University Daily News, for her role as executive producer in the film "An Off-Court Story: The Life of Kresimir Cosic" in the Best Portrait/Biography category.

The piece tells the story of the Croatian basketball player and his life off the court. Specifically, it highlights his contributions to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through stories told by Cosic's family members, President Thomas S. Monson, U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch, Church scholars Ann and Truman Madsen and former Utah Jazz player Gordan Giricek.


New chair of comp. science dept. named

Parris K. Egbert has been appointed chair of the Brigham Young University Computer Science Department effective June 1, 2008. Egbert replaces Tony R. Martinez who has served as chair of the department the past nine years. Christophe Giraud-Carrier has been appointed as the associate chair of the department.


Student receives award to study in China

Senior Gregory Macfarlane was recently awarded a $3,000 Freeman-Asia Award to study globalization in engineering projects at China's Nanjing University. Macfarlane, a civil and environmental engineering major, is participating in a BYU International Study Program.


Professor to mentor in NSA program

The National Security Agency has selected Brigham Young University computer science professor Sean Warnick to mentor top graduate-level interns working on key national security issues for the U.S. Department of Defense. He will mentor top-notch interns from the NSA's Summer Program for Operations Research Technology program, helping them create mathematical models, conduct decision analysis and employ sophisticated simulations on some of the most state-of-the-art computing facilities in the world.


Nursing prof. trained for homeland security

BYU professor of nursing James E. Kohl was specially selected from the nation's 11 million emergency responders to attend U.S. Homeland Security training at the Center for Domestic Preparedness.

The CDP training gives responders the critical skills to be better prepared to effectively respond to local incidents or potential incidents involving weapons of mass destruction. The CDP is operated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and is the only federally chartered weapons of mass destruction training facility in the nation.

DEVOTIONAL: Mary Anne Prater, chair of the Department of Counseling Psychology and Special Education, will speak on using spiritual maps to navigate through life during a Brigham Young University devotional at 11:05 a.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

TUES. AND THURS.

MUSEUM: Children ages five through 12 are invited to participate in "Rocks And Fossils" as part of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum's Wildlife Adventures program. The class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday and noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday and does not include lunch. The cost is $35, with a 20 percent discount on a second class if the child registers for two or more classes at the same time. For more information call 422-5051.

WEDNESDAY

LECTURE: Dodge Billingsley, film producer and director of Combat Films and Research, will present "Tactical Shifts in the Chechen Insurgency: Yes, There is Still a War Going On" at a Global Awareness Lecture at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

FRIDAY

PLANETARIUM: The BYU Planetarium will present "The Universe Near and Far" at public shows at 7 and 8 p.m. Tickets are $2 and are available for purchase at the planetarium entrance.

Friday and Saturday

FILM: A "3-D Creature Double Feature," featuring the films "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and "Revenge of the Creature" will begin at 7 p.m. in the Varsity Theater. Admission is $3 and includes popcorn, 3-D glasses and prizes.

SATURDAY

RACE: BYU Women's Services and Resources will host its fourth annual "Breaking the Silence: 5K Race Against Abuse and Pornography" at 8 a.m. starting in the Richards Building quad.
