Get ready for an all new splash Print E-mail
Lance Madigan - NORTH COUNTY STAFF

There will always be the parades, concerts and baby contests. But Saratoga Springs' 10th anniversary Splash Celebration will offer several new events specific to the Utah Lake theme.

For instance, Saratoga Springs will be shooting for the Guinness Book of World Records title of "Largest Water Gun Fight."

"Lake View Academy is organizing it," said Mandi Johnson, Saratoga Springs events coordinator. "All proceeds will go to Cathy Cox, a young girl with an inoperable brain tumor."

The Guinness challenge is free and will start at 1 p.m. on June 21 at the Harvest Hills Elementary School. With introductions, and presumably, rules, by Mayor Timothy Parker, the United States Navy will launch things for anyone who feels lucky.

The American Red Cross will be on hand to raise awareness about emergency preparedness and to collect donations for supplies to help families in distress.

Immediately after the water gun fight world record is attempted, the Saratoga Springs Fire Department will hose down the crowd to cool things off. For more details, visit www.saratogasquirtworldrecord.blogspot.com.

The Intermountain Wakeboard Association's Hyperlite Tour will also visit Splash on June 21. As part of the Summer Point Series, riders will compete in three amateur and three "Outlaw" (or pro) classifications.

"Of course there are locals, but Intermountain is bringing in riders from all over the country," said Johnson. "They are planning for 75 riders."

Riders will demonstrate their skills starting at 8 a.m. at Eagle Park in the Saratoga Springs Development. Marine Products will be running all the boats, donating gas and supporting the event. For details on registration, go to www.intermountainwakeboard.com/events.html.

Another new event on the water this year is the Electric Light Boat Parade. Boat owners ranging from yachts to dinghies will sport illumination displays in this night time event.

Johnson said that all captains interested in participating must attend a captain's meeting on Friday at the Saratoga Springs City Offices. For details, call 801-766-9793. The parade itself will start at the City Marina about 9:30 p.m. on the June 21, and proceed up the lake shore and return again.

Although, hopefully, golfers will just enjoy the lake view and not get into the water, the Saratoga Classic Golf Tournament at Talons Cove will also tee off on June 21.

Two-man teams will compete in a shotgun/scramble format for prizes and even the chance for a two-year lease for a Mercedes CLK (you just need to hit a hole-in-one). Lunch by "A Viking's Feast" is included in the $65 entry fee.

Space is limited, and registration is available on the city's Web site at www.saratoga-springs.net.¬  The tournament is sponsored by Mountain America Credit Union.

"We are really excited to be focusing on the lake this year," said Johnson.

She said they would of course be doing the carnival, 5K run, outdoor movie (The Water Horse), parade, Police Department Breakfast, Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band, fireworks and more, but wanted to remind everyone that Saratoga is a lake-front city.

"We sort of take it for granted sometimes," she said. For a detailed schedule of events, visit www.saratoga-springs.net or call 801-766-9793.
