Cougars' Arrhenius, Wagner earn All-America track honors Print E-mail
Daily Herald

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Anders, the patriarch of the Arrhenius family, became an All-American in the shot put for BYU in 1975. Niklas, the second of three Arrhenius boys, was a three-time All-American for the Cougars in the discus.

And with a fourth-place finish Friday in the discus at the 2008 NCAA Track and Field Championships, the youngest son of Anders and Kristine Arrhenius, Leif, became the latest family member to earn All-America honors.

"I guess it's just a matter of keeping the legacy going," the youngest Arrhenius said following the competition.

The Cougars got another All-America effort from Angela Wagner, who placed sixth in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Arrenhuis, a sophomore from Orem jumped out to an early lead in the competition on Friday, throwing 187 feet, 11 inches with his second of three throws in the qualifying round. Arrhenius held the lead until Clendon Henderson of Liberty threw 192-7 with his final attempt in the qualifying round.

Arrhenius slipped to third after Yemi Ayeni of Virgina threw 195-2 in the first round of the finals to take the lead. The very next competitor -- Rashaud Scott of Kentucky, who ranked seventh heading in to the finals -- registered what would become the winning throw with a mark of 199-8, forcing Arrhenius into fourth place.

With three more throws in the finals, Arrhenius was unable to improve on his qualifying throw to finish fourth overall.

"I felt pretty good heading in to the finals," Arrhenius said. "I could have thrown farther for sure, but I just didn't finish it. I'm pleased, but I feel like I left some in the tank."

Only a sophomore, and knowing he may have left a little in reserve, Arrhenius is already looking forward to the next two years.

"There's no question. I plan to do better next year," he said.

Wagner, a junior from South Africa who was running in her first national championship event in only her first year of competing in the 3,000m steeplechase, recorded a sixth-place finish on Friday in the event to earn All-America honors.

"I woke up this morning and turned on the television. They said it was Friday the 13th," Wagner said. "I told myself I was just going to switch things around and I will have to make it a good day."

It turned out to be a good day, just as Wagner planned. She not only earned All-America honors with her second-fastest time ever -- 10:06.05 -- but also she had the opportunity to compete in the fastest 3,000-meter race ever contested on U.S. soil. The winner, Colorado's Jenny Barringer, posted a time of 9:29.10 to set a Drake Stadium record, an NCAA Championship meet record, a collegiate record and the fastest time ever recorded in the United States.

"She's amazing," Wagner said of Barringer. "I have really learned a lot from her. She's just a normal girl, a normal student-athlete. It was an honor to run with her and an honor to compete in this event. I hope she makes it to the Olympics."

As the race started, Wagner held her position in the middle of the pack. She traded places with Zsofia Erdelyi of USC and with Sariah Long from Weber State. Heading down the final stretch, however, Stanford's Lindsay Allen and Texas Tech's Irene Kimaiyo caught Wagner and held her off over the last barrier and through the finish line.

"It was a little disappointing, but I know I gave it everything I had and I finished with my second-fastest time ever," Wagner said. "I can't feel badly about finishing sixth. It was such an incredible honor to be here. This has been such a great experience. It has been awesome. When I came out on to the track, I was a little nervous. I looked around and saw all the people in the stands and I realized how amazing it was to be here. I realized how much I have to be thankful for. It was a good day."
