Graduation rate Print E-mail
Daily Herald

It's great that Utah's overall graduation rate is higher than the national average at 78.6 percent. But hidden in this statistic are some very troubling things.

First, our graduation rate has gone down more than six percent in just one year. Second, our overall graduation rate masks the large gap between ethnic groups. For instance, only 53.6 percent of Utah Latinos finish high school, which is 4 points lower than the national average. A 9-point gap also exists between females and males regardless of ethnicity.

Finally, no matter how "high" Utah ranks compared to other states, why do we think it's good news when nearly one in four kids can't finish high school?
