I'm writing in response to your article "Open carry goes too far" in today's Herald. Thank you so much for saying what you did.
I'm 73 years old and have a concealed carry permit, and I don't even own a gun. I got the permit mainly so that I could legally carry a gun if I felt I needed to, and I wanted the training and information at the meetings.
I appreciated everything you said in your article. I think the people who want to "show off" are the ones who like to look tough and carry their weapon in plain sight. I don't think the gun laws have been made to accommodate "show offs." There are people who have liked to show off walking into public schools and shooting people. One walked into Trolley Square and shot a bunch of people. How will we know know the difference between just the "regular show offs" and the ones who will kill people. How are we going to know if the people carrying guns are law-abiding citizens or some lunatic wanting to copy the others, carrying guns in public?
I think "open carry" is a perfect cover, a perfect excuse, a perfect enablement, for people who are criminals or mentally ill to do the same thing and not show up. I think it's very dangerous.
