The South Utah County Relay for Life will take place June 20 at Payson Memorial Park. Activities begin at 5:30 on Friday, June 20. The Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature fund raising event. In 2007, the relay raised more than $1.6 million to fund research. The goal for 2008 is $1.84 million.
Teams of eight to 15 pay a registration fee of $100. The set a goal of raising $100 per team member. The teams walk a designated course throughout the night. Donations to the team may be for the number of laps, for the entire event, or other as the donor chooses. There will be several teams from Spanish Fork and other South Utah Valley communities participating. All are in need of sponsors.
The chair person for the event this year is Teresa Spaunheimer, who may be reached at 465-1980. Terry Jensen of Lakeshore is also willing to assist donors or participants in contacting teams.
Cancer survivors will be participating in survivor activities. They are also willing to discuss their battles with cancer. Estimates are that one in three Americans will contract cancer during their lifetimes.
Those who do not get the disease are still affected when family members or friends get the disease. Cancer, unlike¬ most other diseases, is not a single disease. Instead, it is a variety of conditions in the body that may be caused by numerous agents. Treatment for one type of cancer may be entirely useless for other forms. Although progress towards cures is being made, far more research is needed. |
