OREM
• The Orem Public Library announced this week that it is one of 208 organizations to receive a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to host the Big Read in 2008. The Big Read, launched nationally in 2006 by the NEA, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest, gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss and celebrate great American novels. The library has selected "To Kill a Mockingbird" for this year's Big Read, to be held from Sept. 8 through Oct. 17.
The $10,000 NEA grant is supplemented by a $5,000 grant from the Utah Humanities Council. The funds will go toward materials, as well as a broad schedule of presentations, performances, storytelling, film screenings and discussions hosted by the library and public and private partners within the community.
Harper Lee's classic novel was selected because of its relevance to local readers. The official Big Read in Orem kick-off is Monday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Storytelling Wing and will feature Rex Ellis, acclaimed storyteller and vice president of the Historic Area at Colonial Williamsburg.

• Provo city will celebrate the completion of several enhancements to the Provo City Gun Range at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. on Thursday. The gun range is located in Provo Canyon off Squaw Peak Road. For directions to the gun range, visit www.provo.org. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is free and open to the public.
The Provo City Gun Range consists of a pistol range and a long and short rifle range. Over the past year, the city has extended the length of the ranges; added a concrete base and cover to the firing lines; filled in the space between the firing lines and targets, as well as the parking lot, with gravel; and installed new, movable target holders. Now when gun range users practice shooting, they can stand and walk on the concrete base and gravel instead of dirt and mud. In addition, the cover to the firing lines will provide them shade and protection from the elements.
Provo city will provide some rifles and ammunition at the ribbon-cutting for those who want to practice shooting. There will also be light refreshments.
