In your editorial published on June 19, 2008 regarding the increase in fuel prices, you opined that I needed pressure from Utahns to support the development of oil shale. Let me be clear, I have always supported oil shale development. It is a very important element of a comprehensive energy plan that will increase domestic production and ensure America's freedom from foreign oil.
While I have long supported investment in oil shale, which you did not accurately note in your editorial, I have also supported developing Utah's abundant tar sands. What's more, I do believe that we ought to pursue domestic drilling, particularly off-shore drilling. As a former businessman in the energy industry, I have a long history of advocating a balanced domestic production portfolio that includes a wide range of fossil fuel and alternative fuels.
You correctly noted that I have put forward legislation to stop unwarranted speculation in foreign financial markets, however you incorrectly concluded that my proposal will not have an immediate impact on the problem. We have had witnesses testify before congress within the past month that this type of activity has increased the price of oil up to $50 per barrel. Your editorial was quick to dismiss this option as a means to address rising fuel costs, but in fact it may be the best available option we have for a reduction in prices in the short-term. Regardless, I welcome the calls from Utahns who took the time to call my office with comments as I have enjoyed the opportunity to set the record straight.
