Well fails in Lehi's Traverse Mtn. Print E-mail
Cathy Allred - DAILY HERALD

Traverse Mountain residents in Lehi are being asked to conserve water while the well in their area is out of service.

The city is using a backup booster pump so Traverse Mountain residents have enough water for cooking, washing and drinking.

"We do have sources and revalving we've redone in making attempts to get as much water up to the site as possible," Lehi water superintendent Lee Barnes said.

Failure of the Traverse Mountain well affects both culinary and secondary water systems. Until the well is running again, the pressurized irrigation water system that residents use to water their lawns is completely down, and Lehi's water department is asking homeowners to restrict watering lawns until the pump is fixed or replaced.

"If they try to use their house water for the sprinkler system, they will be depleting their drinking water supply," Barnes said. "As long as they don't overdo their drinking water on their lawns they should have plenty of culinary water for other uses."

There are some exceptions. "If they have some critical landscaping that might die, we're allowing them to use culinary water on some areas," said Jim Hewitson, Lehi public works director.

The pump for the downed well at Traverse Mountain began to show signs of failure on June 15.

"Something happened to the pump, we're not sure what," Hewitson said. "We pulled the pump out and ordered a new one." He said he expects the replacement pump will arrive late this week or early next week.

The backup pump being used to get water to the area is kept on hand by the city staff for such emergencies. It is pulling water from a south Lehi water district to Traverse Mountain until the well is fixed.
