OREM

• Congratulations to Isaac Earl, a Utah County Academy of Sciences student from Orem who was awarded an AFS 2008 Arabic Summer Language Institute Scholarship, a distinction shared by only 30 high school students nationwide. This prestigious, merit-based program awards full scholarships for an intensive Arabic language study program in Cairo, Egypt. The program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and AFS Intercultural Programs/USA. This is part of a growing initiative launched by President Bush in 2006 to increase the number of young Americans studying critical languages. During a six-week program this summer, Earl will gain firsthand knowledge of the Egyptian culture by living with a host family to experience life as a member of a family, school and community.

PROVO

• Provo High School students Benjamin Hernandez and Austin Springer will be among the 100 students, two from every state, competing in the national finals of the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills in Dearborn, Mich., today. This exciting hands-on competition determines the nation's most auto savvy teens. Led by Instructor Coleman McVea, the two Provo students will be among the 50 two-person teams facing off in a timed challenge to diagnose, repair and drive across the finish line identically and deliberately bugged 2008 Ford Focuses arrayed in front of Ford World Headquarters. The top 10 winning teams will receive scholarships and prizes valued at more than $7 million total to help further their education and training as auto technicians and engineers.

LEHI

• The Lehi Round-Up is this week. This celebration revolves around a three-day professional rodeo and daily arts shows. Children might like half-price day at the Lehi Legacy Center or the horse parade, and adults might like the horseshoe, swimming or tennis tournaments. There's also a chuckwagon breakfast, a family barbecue and an evening of cowboy poetry. For more information, call 766-3951 or visit www.lehi-ut.gov/roundup.
