The Highland City Council had an opportunity to keep residents' property taxes from increasing. Instead of taking the prudent action of reducing expenditures for non-essential services or amenities, the city council voted 3-2 to accept Utah County's certified tax rate.
In effect, the Highland City Council voted to raise the resident's property taxes. I don't know about most of the newspaper's readers, but when I face a loss of income, as my family recently did, I start looking for ways to reduce my spending. I suspect the majority of readers do too.
In my opinion, in the face of potentially declining tax revenues a city government should be looking to reduce spending. Spending for the sake of maintaining a city's image is a slap in the face of its residents, especially its long time residents. We don't need an expansion of city parks or more books in the soon to be finished library. What the residents of Highland need is assurances that they can still afford to live here.
