It's been a long road -- about 80,000 changed Web pages and nearly 2,000 new signs -- from Utah Valley State College to Utah Valley University, but as the institution nears the deadline, school administrators say they're ready.
"We've hit the target. We had a year and half to do it and we did it," said UVSC vice president Cameron Martin, who headed the school's transition task force.
The name change that gave the school license to begin the transition was passed by the state Legislature in February 2007, and signed by Gov. Jon Huntsman in March of that year. Utah Valley University becomes the school's official name on Tuesday.
Earlier this week, crews placed 8-foot-tall letters on the McKay Events Center denoting Utah Valley University. Crews have until Friday to change the school's marquee, which is visible from Interstate 15. Jim Michaelis, UVSC's associate vice president for facilities, said those two signs should be the last of the school's approximately 2,000 signs that need to be changed.
"I'm sure I've forgotten something. We only had a couple of thousand to do," Michaelis said.
The signs are the last items on a list that took a year and half of work for the school, which included rewriting policies, creating a master's degree program, reworking the academic structure, creating a new image, hiring scores of new faculty and staff, building a library and more.
There are still small loose ends to tie up to make the transition complete, but they aren't vital to Tuesday's deadline and will continue to be completed throughout the summer.
Val Peterson, UVSC's vice president of legislative affairs, said the new university will still be transferring Web pages and e-mail address throughout the summer. UVSC had about 80,000 Web pages that needed to be changed to the UVU domain as well as all employee e-mail addresses. E-mail addresses will remain the same, except they'll end in uvu.edu instead of uvsc.edu. E-mail sent to old e-mail addresses will be forwarded.
Martin said legal documents and contracts that contain UVSC's name cannot change until UVU is legally the name. Other than that, it's time to dance the night away at UVSC's til-midnight party on June 30.
"We just have yet to throw the big party," Martin said.
