Lightning Safety Awareness Week is June 22-28 and the National Weather Service requests your help in this campaign designed to educate the citizens of Utah about lightning risks and how to protect yourself and your loved ones.
In Utah, lightning has claimed the lives of 61 people since 1950, more than any other thunderstorm-related hazard. With your help in spreading the lightning safety message, hopefully we can reduce the number of lightning victims. The 2008 campaign focuses on risk reduction and individual responsibility.
The 2008 Lightning Safety Awareness Week publication is attached for your use and further distribution. The Governor's Declaration of Lightning Safety Awareness Week in Utah and the mentioned publication are posted on the National Weather Service Salt Lake City web page at http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/slc/wxsafety, the National Weather Service Grand Junction web site at:http://www.crh.noaa.gov/gjt/?n=lightningawareness, and the Utah Department of Public Safety's Division of Homeland Security web site at http://homelandsecurity.utah.gov.
You are encouraged to visit the National Weather Service Lightning Safety web site at http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov. This site contains a wealth of information, including educational games for kids and audio/video PSAs.
