After a week full of activities and strawberries, the annual Pleasant Grove celebration, Strawberry Days, wrapped up with a Concert in the Park on Sunday, performed by Kenny Favero. The festivities began a week earlier with a performance by Bluegrass Thunder.
"I was pretty happy because I had people come up to me saying 'This is the first year we've ever done this. This is great,'" said Glen Haynie, Strawberry Days Committee Chairman. "Families told me that this is the first year they experienced the Concert and Huck Finn Day and they had a great time."
Although the outdoor concerts, Huck Finn Day and other events are yearly traditions, new people attend each time. "The goal for me every year is to see how many new people we can get involved," said Haynie.
According to Haynie, the rodeo draws the biggest crowds during the week.
"Wednesday and Thursday nights were record breakers. Saturday, we had to turn people away," he said.
This year, 1,100 additional seats were available for the rodeo as well as remodeled food stands with six extra serving windows. The Jumbotron, a new feature this year, added to the excitement.
Another attraction is the Mammoth Parade, which took place on Saturday. According to Lisa Young, parade coordinator, there were 123 entries in this year's parade. The 86 Boy Scouts carrying flags was something new this year.
The Mayor's Choice Award was given to the Pleasant Grove City float. The Sweepstakes Award was given to the Orem City float. Queen's Choice, chosen by Miss Pleasant Grove Staci Spinder, was given to the Little Miss Lindon float and the Best Business Award was given to Larry H. Miller Entertainment.
According to Young, members of the Pleasant Grove Youth Council helped to plan and work at the parade.
"They do all of it," she said. That work included giving out 3,500 Popsicles to parade participants at the end of the route. Members of the Council worked throughout the week at other events as well.
The Strawberry Days Committee will get a break until January, which is when they will begin planning Strawberry Days 2009. In addition to the Strawberry Days Committee, there is a separate Rodeo Committee. |
