Per usual, BYU's summer football camp is paying off in the recruiting game.
Mitch Matthews (6-5 195 WR) of Southridge High School in Beaverton, Ore., and Trevor Bateman (5-11 165 CB) of Palm Desert High School in Indio, Calif., are the latest to make oral commitments to the Cougars this week, according to Total Blue Sports.
Mitch Matthews is the younger brother of Marcus Matthews, a BYU signee from the Class of 2008 who is currently serving an LDS mission to Sweden. The younger Matthews caught 42 passes for 586 yards and six touchdowns as a junior at Southridge. His other scholarship offer was from UNLV and he'd received attention from Boise State, UCLA, Washington, Idaho and Oregon State.
Bateman reportedly has a 4.4 40-yard dash time and also received offers from Arizona and UNLV. Other schools interested in Bateman's services included Boise State, California and Stanford.
The two oral commitments brings BYU's Class of 2009 to nine. The others are Northridge running back Peni Maka'afi, Logan High and former Utah State quarterback Riley Nelson, Timpview offensive lineman Tui Crichton, Ponderosa High (Colo.) offensive lineman Terry Alletto, Timpview safety Craig Bills, Kahuku High (Hawaii) safetly Jray Galea'i and Snow Canyon High running back Adam Timo.
The class of 2009 will also include former Kahuku High star and UNLV recruit Malosi Te'o (5-11 195 RB), who has made an oral commitment to sign with BYU when he returns from his LDS mission in New York. |
