Neurobiologist named U. of Utah's research exec -- Thomas N. Parks, executive director of the Brain Institute at the University of Utah, was named the university's vice president of research. His area of research focuses on understanding the development of the nervous system, especially the auditory system.

Parks, 58, a professor and former chair of the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy since 2004, took the position as vice president of research on an interim basis in January. He replaces Raymond Gesteland, a geneticist, who returned to his lab after serving in that role for seven years.

As cofounder of NPS Pharmaceuticals, Parks served on its board until 2006, and was responsible for recruiting three professors hired for the state USTAR initiative. Parks, who expects to step down from his position at the Brain Institute, will be replaced by Monica Vetter, who is now acting chair of the Neurobiology and Anatomy Department.
