SALEM, Ore. -- The BYU men's soccer team came up just short of a win as the Cougars tied the Cascade Surge 1-1 in P--The Cougars came just short of a win tonight in their tied game against the Cascade Surge in Premier Development League action Saturday.

The Cougars scored first, off a free kick just before halftime that was awarded to BYU's Britton Osborne. Morgan Gilliam struck the kick from just outside the box and put it into the near post for a 1-0 lead.

"The game started off well for us," said BYU defender Clay Christenson. "We had a lot of possession of the ball and really controlled the game."

In the 85th minute, the Surge were awarded a penalty kick, but Arron Patrick missed the goal, putting it over the crossbar.

But two minutes later, Cascade's Kendell McFayden played the ball to Stefan Ostergren, who finished it into the back of the net to tie the game.

"It's disappointing to have that much possession and come away with only one goal," said BYU coach Chris Watkins.

The Cougars earned four points in their road trip and are still in contention to make the playoffs.

BYU hosts the Ogden Outlaws on July 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Haws Field.
